Monki Bistro

Trio of chocolate mini- domes from MonkiBistro

I am pretty sure that half of my recent restaraunt visits lately have come directly from Instagram… between neat ice cream places and cool eateries – there’s also Monki Bistro. (Seriously… check out the Monki Bistro Instagram feed. Maybe not on an empty stomach though…)

Well, I put the idea forward to the little foodie group I’m a part of, and one Sunday afternoon we headed there, en mass.

Kruse’s Bakery

Delicious rum balls from Kruse’s Bakery – located in the Market On Macleod in Calgary, Alberta

My last post wasn’t very positive I’m afraid… but in contrast, I’m back writing about Kruse’s Bakery again. I’m pretty sure this is one of my favourite bakeries in Calgary (tied for the top spot with Gluten Free/Paleo/Vegan Nourish Kitchen & Bakery, and Glamorgan Bakery)  There are a few favourite things I get nearly every time I visit (The lemon strudel) and then a few things I’ll pick up now and then… but there are also new things to try too. Rolled Ice Cream

Bitumen Black Gold rolled ice cream from Scrollio Handcrafted Desserts

Bitumen Black Gold rolled ice cream from Scrollio Handcrafted Desserts

So this summer I tried rolled ice cream at a number of different places – this post is a LONG time coming for sure.. I’ve already blogged about Sweet Tooth Ice Cream here in Calgary, but there is also Scrollio Handcrafted Desserts here in Calgary, and two different locations of Scoop n Roll in Edmonton.

Scrollio

Scrollio is located on 17th Avenue not far from Tubby Dog and Made By Marcus. I visited there first with a friend on a nice warm day and ice cream was a delightful treat. While my friend had a chocolate ice cream topped off with raspberries and blueberries, I had their Bitumen Black Gold charcoal ice cream flavoured with rosewater and topped with ground pistachios. The rosewater in the (otherwise flavourless?) charcoal ice cream was awesome – a lovely delicate flavour.

Scoop N Roll food truck, Edmonton

While I was visiting my friend in Edmonton, we were both in the mood for Ice Cream, and he thought he remembered something not far from where we were. The shop was actually no longer in business (or he had the location incorrect) but a quick GoogleMaps search and I found Scoop N Roll – a food truck that was semi-permanently parked near a bowling alley nearby. It’s not there anymore (I’m not sure where the truck has moved to, or if it’s just seasonal) but we were happy to find it – as was the long line up of others waiting to place their order and get their rolled ice cream.

My friend had a fruit-filled ice cream, while I went for the matcha green tea (of course!) filled with nutella!

Scoop n Roll in Kingsway Mall, Edmonton

On another Edmonton visit we stopped in Kingsway Mall for even MORE rolled ice cream. This time around there wasn’t any line at all. They didn’t seem to have the same menu, so I ended up with a chocolate ice cream with raspberry and chocolate chips, topped off with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. The chocolate chips were a bad choice for me, as they were too hard against the nice smooth texture of the rest of the dessert.

Rolled Ice cream blog post promoI’ve been to Sweet Tooth again once the weather got colder – I can pretty much eat ice cream any time of year! What about you – will ice cream still have a place in your wintertime dessert menu, or do you switch to warm desserts like pies when the temperature drops?
Come follow me on Facebook at Happy Sushi Belly where I share all of the blog posts as they go out plus a few other articles and photos… OR come follow me on Instagram if you want food photos plus lots of other things that catch my fancy.

Skye and her Made By Marcus ice cream

This post is a LONG time coming – not just in how long it took for me to finally get to Made By Marcus – but also in how long between getting there and posting this has taken!

I had tried to get down to the Made By Marcus store on 17th Avenue for a while… but then I got derailed, or put off by long lines. Finally I got there with my friend Skye (from Dyeing For It) and tried the much raved about ice cream after dinner.

Sweet Tooth rolled Ice Cream

Rolled Ice Cream – I think I’m a little late to the party, because a friend was trying to get me to try out rolled ice cream LAST summer when there was a food truck in Calgary specializing in it. However… that never did happen. (Food trucks are always downtown during lunch and I don’t work downtown!)

Colourful tarts and other goodies from Nourish Kitchen and Bakery

At the end of April a friend invited me to the YYC Alternative Market. In the back of my mind I really hoped that the market would be retro-funky-goth-cool… and while there were a lot of vendors there that fit that bill – I was also super happy see my friends from Nourish Kitchen and Bakery!

Every time I’m down at the Market On MacLeod (usually to get sushi!) I swing by Kruse’s Bakery too. There are a few things I love every time I go – like their lemon strudel or the hockey pucks – but I also usually am coersed into trying one or two other things too. Luckily I don’t have a gluten/ dairy/ egg intolerance, so the bakery-world is my tasty oyster!

Parc de la Chute-Montmorency

Lovely dessert

Lovely dessert

On the same trip where we visited the sugar shack and enjoyed Maple Syrup treats we also stopped at Parc de la Chute-Montmorency – the park with Montmorency Falls. There’s a charming hotel there, Manoir Montmorency. We had lunch there that was really lovely – in a room with a sky-painted ceiling. (Though no views of the falls unfortunately!)

My photos of the falls were super rushed, so they weren’t very good, so here’s a pretty photo from a photographer on Instagram!
