Sushi Hanami has a new menu

Sushi Hanami got a new menu a while ago, but I didn’t take any photos until recently when I visited with a friend.

I had an order of tuna sashimi, followed by a Tropical roll with seared tuna and mango.

Although this meal I had in the restaurant, a while ago I placed a to-go order on the phone.  I need to remember not to order on the phone, because for the second time, they got my order wrong. It’s just probably easier to order in person, then go grab a coffee or sit and play on my phone, than get frustrated with the wrong order.

I also got photos of the new menu.

Have you been to Sushi Hanami since they got a new menu? What do you think?

Sushi: Hanami

A while back a friend and I went for a nice long walk around the Glenmore Reservoir area, and celebrated our good walk with sushi dinner! (I figure sushi dinner is always appropriate way to celebrate anything – from birthday to a good hair day.) Our first choice was Momoyama – but since it was almost 10pm when we finally got around to thinking about food – they were disappointingly closed.

Instead we popped into the nearby Sushi Hanami, and were one of the last ones in the restaurant for the night.

Having dinner at Sushi Hanami

First up, a roll off their specialty roll menu; a 1/2 cooked roll – filled with smoked salmon, cream cheese and avocado, it is topped with raw salmon, and then quickly seared on one side, and topped with unagi sauce and a dot of mayo.  This was fabulous! I’ll admit I kind of got tired of the taste near the end – it would have been better to have been brought out with other things, or shared with my friend (who had her own roll to contend with).  The roll was also quite large – challenging to eat in one bite – but we were up to the challenge!  Wouldn’t you know though –  I don’t remember the NAME of the roll (nor could I find it on my old photo of the menu – so it must be a newer addition…?)

Having dinner at Sushi Hanami

Next came our “dessert sushi” – a wee bit early – but still fantastic.  She had Saba (Mackerel) while I stuck with my chopped scallop.  I have this here often, and it’s almost totally perfect.

Oh, and if our ‘we’ve-been-friends-too-long’-ness isn’t enough – yep, we have matching purses.  (Not on purpose though!)

Having dinner at Sushi Hanami

Next up, we both ordered a dish or tuna sashimi which they brought together.  I had been so hungry when we arrived, but my eyes were bigger than my stomach, and I didn’t even touch my sashimi – instead taking it home for breakfast the next morning.  (There’s nothing wrong with sashimi for breakfast, right? In my defense, it was a weekend and my breakfast was at 11am..or something like that).  My friend did say that it was awesome though – and even the next day it was pretty darn good.

Having dinner at Sushi Hanami

Next up – the Volcano Roll.  This is a California roll topped with spicy scallop (with onion) and baked in a tiny foil tray.  I’ve had this before, and was in the mood for it – but I wasn’t as happy with it as I had been with the other roll.  The scallop was just a bit too spicy for me, and lacked the creaminess that I think I was more in the mood for.  You know those moments when you know what you are getting but still aren’t totally happy….

Having dinner at Sushi Hanami

My friend ordered another specialty roll (the name of which I’ve also forgotten!), and I took a (terrible!) photo of it too – this was really delicious as well (of course we traded one of my roll pieces for one of hers!) and I think I might order it the next time I am there, even though  it didn’t appeal to me on the menu.  It has cucumber and seared tuna, topped with mango and tuna, and finally “glittering” eggs. (A bit of an inside joke about the eggs on top.)

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve been to Sushi Hanami by far click the Hanami tag below for all the rest!

Sushi: Dining in at Sushi Hanami

In April (yes, I know, I’m so far behind!) I convinced my non-sushi-loving friend to come for sushi with me (with the promise of bento boxes)… Since we were in my end of town and weren’t in the mood for anything fancy, we popped into an otherwise empty Sushi Hanami (Monday night, about 5:30pm).  By the time we left there were a few more tables occupied, but it was kind of nice to have the quiet…

I ordered:

  • Tuna and Salmon sashimi (3 pc of each)
  • Chopped scallop battleships (They don’t carry Ikura!)
  • Volcano roll

While my companion ordered the chicken and tempura prawn bento box.

My order

Sushi Hanami

The tuna sashimi was good – very good actually – better than a previous visit to my otherwise-favorite place, Momo-Yama a few nights before, while the salmon was fine, but lacked as much delicious salmon flavour as I was really hoping to experience.

The chopped scallop battlships were delicious, and left me wanting more…. (who can resist chopped scallops, mayo, and tobiko?)

Volcano roll

The Volcano roll wasn’t quite what I had anticipated… I think I was thinking of the Volcano roll I had in Hawaii back in February, but instead this was something entirely different.  This was a California roll with chopped scallops (and onions, which was not advertised.. boooo!) in spicy sauce, baked.  It was very unusual.  I didn’t like the onions (I hate ’em – why don’t people let me know that they’re using them when they affect the taste so much?!?) but the spicy sauce was actually alright – not too spicy, and warm, I actually didn’t mind it with the scallops.  (I’ve tried spicy scallop battleships, and didn’t like them at all… the warmth must make a positive difference!)  The cooler California roll on the bottom ended up being quite refreshing after the spicy and warm – really quite nice.  (Just lose the onions next time!)

I had been in the mood for a specialty roll that was different and unusual, but was a bit disappointed in their selection of ‘special’ rolls.  They weren’t very special at all.  I guess it’s time to head back to Globefish!

My companion’s order

Bento box

My companion’s bento box came with a delicious (she said!) bowl of miso soup, chicken (baked or fried, I’m not sure… there was batter involved though!), tempura prawns with a creamy dipping sauce, three pieces of California roll, a huge serving of salad with dressing already on it (not my preference – dressing on the side please…) loads of ginger, and four nigiri sushi pieces.

While my non-sushi-loving friend was fine with the California rolls, one piece of nigiri sushi was enough for her, so my generous self took the remaining three nigiri sushi pieces off her hands. *cough cough*  (She also tried on of my volcano roll pieces btw… I’m not a total leech!) I was quite disappointed – the nigiri pieces in the bento box tasted pre-made.. the rice was dry and the fish rather flavourless.  However, she said that the rest was delicious – and if you are going out with a non-sushi-loving friend, it’s a very affordable option – her box cost just a little over half of what my meal cost – and I think she got more food to fill a hungry tummy!

Sushi Hanami offers four all-day bento boxes, and another 5 or 6 (I didn’t look) for lunch only.  I have been meaning to head over there with a co-worker for a few months now… (our Fridays start off so quiet at the beginning of the week and keep getting packed by the end of the week!) so I might have to try one of the bento boxes myself… supplemented with a chopped scallop battleship though of course!

Request

So, I clearly need to find more places that offer awesome (and well-priced) bento boxes.  Since that’s not something I normally look for on a menu, gimme some recommendations where I can go with my non-sushi-loving friends!  Let me know about some of the best bentos in Calgary in the comments below!

Sushi: Yet another take out dinner from Sushi Hanami

I visit my closest Sushi place so often, that it’s almost not even worth talking about.  For more posts about Sushi Hanami, just click the Sushi Hanami tag

So, instead – photos!

Interior shot thanks to my iPhone

Now and again I like to share photos of the interiors of the places I go.  They haven’t even replaced the tiles since this was a doughnut shop!  Faces blurred for privacy.  It was still pretty early in the evening (I had gotten out of class half an hour early), so I was the only one in there. While this is unusual, it never seems PACKED in there either.

Yummy take out! I think my iPhone photos are getting better!

Nothing to unusual… my regular order of tuna & salmon sashimi, two pieces of chopped scallop, and since they don’t carry Ikura, two pieces of Tobiko instead.

So, the bill for my take out came to $22.52 with tax.

Price chart

Sushi Menu price (before tax)
Salmon & tuna sashimi $11.9x/ 6 pieces
Special scallop $2.50 / each
Tobiko $2.25 / each

Sushi: Sushi Hanami

Salmon and tuna sashimi from Sushi Hanami

Well I’ve posted about Sushi Hanami a number of times previously, so I won’t bother commenting again, instead just some Happy Sushi Belly photos of take-out dinner the other day when only sushi would do! (I really need to start incorporating some veg with my sushi meals though….)

Yummy dinner from Sushi Hanami

Honestly, Sushi Hanami isn’t my favorite sushi place, in case you’re wondering why I go there so much… but they have a good take-out system, and they are super-close to where I live!  That makes for easy sushi!

Ikura from Sushi Hanami

Delicious looking, right?

Sushi Hanami (again!)

I’ve written about Sushi Hanami a few times before (May 2011 and August 2011) – it’s really close to where I live so it’s easy to pop over to, and hence, easy to write about!

I ended up popping over there a while back and grabbing some sushi for take-out.  Since it`s nothing all that different from what I`ve blogged about before, I`ll just share pictures!

Sushi Hanami revisited

When I go out for sushi, I want sushi, but often enough I’m going out with someone who isn’t in the mood for a just sushi meal, so close by is Sushi Hanami, which I’ve blogged about before.

If you’re not interested in sushi, they offer a fairly substantial bento box, for a very reasonable price.

My companion's bento box

For lunch, the bento box was 11$ (plus tax, tip, etc) which seems like a pretty good price.  It included Chicken, tempura, a few pieces of nigiri sushi, half a roll, plus soup and a salad.  Pretty good, right?

The a la carte menu for sushi

For me though, I stuck with sushi!  I had my favorite special scallop rolls (which weren’t as good as they usually are), tobiko, and a “SST roll” (salmon, scallop, tuna) which I found really disappointing.  They’ve recently changed up their menu, and perhaps this is a new item – but it’s that “huge roll” style of roll that I don’t really care for.  When the chef combines flavors to create something tasty – I want to taste that combination – but with these large rolls I find that I have to pick them apart to eat them.  So, I get a bite of one thing, a bite of something else, and then a bite of something else.  😦

My SST roll

I also like it when something has the ingredients – and lists ALL of the ingredients.  This roll seemed to be half lettuce – which I had not anticipated – and it’s all that I could really taste in this roll.

Flying fish roe and special scallop rolls

Have you tried any of the items on the new menu?  What are your favorites? Let us know in the comments below, or read my previous blog post about Sushi Hanami!

Sushi Hanami

Sushi Hanami is located in a former Robin’s Donuts (doughnuts) shop, and there have been a few other things in this location since.  However, Sushi Hanami has been here for a number of years now, though I only started visiting fairly recently.

First off, I wouldn’t recommend going in the evening for dinner. The hostess has routinely been distracted/rude to me, while paying a lot of attention to other people in the restaurant.  However, she only seems to work in the evening, and other times I’ve gone there (late afternoon and lunchtime) she doesn’t seem to work there.  The other staff have always been fantastic; attentive without overbearing, prompt and helpful.

There is a fair amount of take-out traffic that comes through Sushi Hanami; I’ve done take-out as well, and although I don’t like it as much (something is lacking in the whole sushi experience when I’m eating out of styrofoam!) it’s a decent alternative if you live nearby. (Or, if like me, you want to have dinner with someone who doesn’t like sushi…)

2 gyoza from Sushi Hanami

I’ve been there for lunch with a friend as well, and the bento boxes are pretty substantial and a decent price.  However, when I go for sushi, I want sushi!  Sushi Hanami’s is good, but I wouldn’t consider it to be exceptional.  The tempura is a bit oily, so only order a few pieces at a time – so they don’t cool off before you eat them.  I think this is good advice for most tempura though!  The gyoza is good, but I’m still looking for the Best Gyoza in Calgary.. and unfortunately this isn’t it.  😦   They are also somewhat different shaped than other places – which leads me to suspect that others might be ordering them from a supplier ready-to-cook, while perhaps Sushi Hanami are making their own?  Even if the flavor isn’t the best I’ve ever tasted, this would certainly kick them up a few notches in the ranking in my books!

The saving grace, and what will keep me going back – they do a really good job of my favorite – special scallop rolls!  Now, if they could also start offering Ikura – salmon roe – my second favorite style of battleship sushi right now, then I would probably start going there even more often!
