Bodum travel press
I’m slowly accumulating a small collection of tea ‘accessories’ – and since I have a pretty decent method of steeping loose leaf teas at home, one of the things I’ve been focusing on have been tools for enjoying them at work as well. (Where we have boiling hot water on tap!)
I love the beauty and elegance of the french press which is used for both coffee and tea, and saw this Bodum travel press at the Banff Tea Company shop during my last trip to Banff.
The size is good (I got the larger of the two available) however, I find that the tea doesn’t stay as hot as I’d like it to. Like most travel mugs, the lid is good to avoid general spills, but it won’t stay spill-free through acrobatic purse-tumbling, and while the instructions say you can change the depth of the press – you can only do so by a millimeter or so. The screen has unscrewed twice on me, and is really hard to remove when that has happened, but this is probably a good feature for cleaning.
I presume that the designer uses a lot more tea than I do, because there’s a fair amount of space in the bottom. The extra room in the bottom (which keeps the leaves in liquid, instead of compressing them down entirely) makes the press very easy to clean though, which is a great advantage, especially in a travel press. It has worked well for all types of tea (I find rooibos tends to be tricky with strainers and infusers).

I haven’t looked for them, but I presume that different specialty tea and coffee shops would still carry it. There are also a few different designs- I THINK I saw some in Teaopia… but I could be totally mistaken (since I wasn’t specifically looking for another…)

No, this is a WordPress theme – they make it really easy for you to start your own blog or website without having to know much markup language (though it helps for some things…) This is the “Choco” theme. If you scroll to the very bottom of this page, you’ll see more information in the footer, follow the links and you can get your own!

Great post that I stumbled across just this evening while searching for a solution to a nagging problem. I kicked my coffee habit (5-6 cups daily) and dove deep into the world of loose lead teas, but doing so in my cubicle farm was a challenge. I picked up the stainless version of the bodum travel press last week and love it with one exception: I keep getting a bitter astringent brew as it sits in the mug even with the plunger fully depressed. The first sips are great, but after 10+ minutes, the bitterness seems to increase; is this something you’ve heard/noticed? Thoughts?

I did notice that – if the tea is really well compressed under the plunger there isn’t as bad of an impact, but if there’s liquid in there (if you used less tea leaves) then the liquid can still flow back and forth. The bitter taste is likely over-steeped tea leaves; that’s what I’ve experienced. If you’re in one place (work, home) I recommend using the Tuffy strainer https://happysushibelly.wordpress.com/2011/06/03/tuff-little-tea-strainer/ (or a similar version) and then pull the leaves out to re-use or discard/compost.
