Red Ember Japanese Cuisine

Two sushi posts in a row!

Not long ago my friend suggested his favourite sushi place – Red Ember in the Kensington area. While it’s a small place, and there’s not much nearby parking, I thought it was great and would recommend you check it out too!

I had an order of tuna sashimi, along with a Kamikaze roll (Special Scallop, Tempura Flake, Tobiko, Wrapped with Tuna). The tuna sashimi was only fine- nothing special either way, however the Kamikaze roll was fantastic.

The location might be the only thing that would keep me from heading back to Red Ember – though perhaps my friend who lives close to the area will want to make a return visit sometime again!

Tea: The Naked Leaf

Here’s another tea shop for my ‘must-visit’ list – the Naked Leaf.  I’m not sure how I missed it on my last trip into Kensington, but I did.  What caught my attention is an upcoming event they’re hosting that I would love to attend…

The event is called FUNdraiser for Japan – and it’s a sushi-making and Japanese food evening.  It’s set to be a hands-on sushi making class using less traditional sushi ingredients and more practical, every-day fillings.  The host will also be serving miso soup, teriyaki chicken, dessert, and presumably – tea!  The event is being hosted in support of fundraising for the Japanese Red Cross, there are 40 spots, it’s happening May 28th, and the cost is 50$ per person.  Visit their website at for more information.

Their website is interesting – with every purchase you get a free tin to hold the tea with art from local Calgary artists.  (You can also submit your own art as well for special occasions or whatever.)

Have you been to the Naked Leaf?  What do you recommend?

Tea: Oolong Tea House

Tea. Photo by Modomatic

In a recent post about David’s Tea shop, I was wondering about a tea shop I haven’t been to yet.  Similarly, I have only been to the Oolong Tea House once, and then I was quickly in and out.  I was browsing there while meeting up with someone in Kensington.  I had hoped to head back when we met up, but then we got distracted with something else and I missed my chance.

Oolong’s shop in Kensington is small, and filled with shelves of loose leaf tea.  There is also a location in McKenzie Towne according to their website.  Along with the shelves of tea, they also offer a cafe service, where they can make you a cup of tea to drink in-store (there are a few tables and chairs if I remember correctly) or to-go.  It looks like their McKenzie Towne location is a bit larger, according to blogger Elsie Hui.  If you’re looking for a review of the shop, check out her blog post Oolong Tea House McKenzie Towne. Eat In Calgaryalso has Oolong Tea House on a blog list of several tea and coffee shops in Calgary.

If you’ve been to Oolong Tea House, let us know in the comments section below, along with what your favorite tea from there is!  Hopefully we’ll be down one of these days to check it out!
