Viking Age style flatbread

Viking age style flatbread, ready to pack up for camp

Viking age style flatbread, ready to pack up for camp (or top with honey and nom…)

For a SCA camping event I was going to, I wanted to make some semi-authentic (ish) food to enjoy at the event. While I have a number of different costumes, my main persona is 11th Century Norse, (Icelandic to be specific) aka VIKING. Viking-age attire is also way easier to wear and more comfortable at camping events for that matter too.

One of the dishes I wanted to make was a Viking-style flatbread.

The Street Eatery

Vegetarian Naan Rola from the Street Eatery in downtown Calgary (without onions)

After seeing them tagged on Instagram, I was totally keen to check out The Street Eatery, located in downtown Calgary. Their Instagram feed is lots of cool fusion food… but what caught my eye were the super-cool over-the-top milkshakes. I convinced some friends to join me one evening. Although I was going for the milkshakes… I couldn’t help myself from the savory instead.

Green tea flavoured sticky ball filled with red bean paste from the Rainbow Bakery in Chinatown’s Dragon City Mall

I grabbed some BBQ pork buns for a friend’s birthday party a while back and in talking about it later, she asked where I picked them up… so here’s the secret – Rainbow Bakery in the Dragon City Mall in Chinatown. They don’t seem to have a website, but I pop in there once in a while when I’m in the neighbourhood for buns, sticky rice balls, and other goodies.

Maruju Sushi on Centre Street YYC

Tuna, avocado, and mango ‘tartar’ from Maruju sushi on centre street just north of Chinatown in Calgary

There’s a meeting place I’ve been going to a lot lately, but I always seem to mis-time how long it will take for me to get there from work… so I always end up being 30-60 minutes earlier than I need to be. While normally I’ll pop over into Starbucks across the street… one time I stopped in at Maruju Sushi.

Seared Tuna for dinner

Using the oil from the Eau Claire Oil & Vinegar bar to cook delicious furikake-coated tuna steaks for dinner!

Using the oil from the Eau Claire Oil & Vinegar bar to cook delicious furikake-coated tuna steaks for dinner!

A while back I shared my Hawaiian-inspired seared tuna dish… well I made it up again, this time using oil from the Eau Claire Oil & Vinegar Bar to cook the tuna. I used my favourite Furikake seasoning to coat the tuna steak… and created SO much NOM.

All You Can Eat at The One Sushi

Yummy salmon and tuna sashimi from The One Sushi in Calgary on MacLeod Trail

Ages ago I posted about The One Sushi – on MacLeod Trail, but I hadn’t been back since the accident where a car crashed into the restaurant. I was with someone who was in the mood for buffet-style food, and I wanted sushi (when DON’T I want sushi?) so we settled on checking out The One.

Sweet Tooth rolled Ice Cream

Rolled Ice Cream – I think I’m a little late to the party, because a friend was trying to get me to try out rolled ice cream LAST summer when there was a food truck in Calgary specializing in it. However… that never did happen. (Food trucks are always downtown during lunch and I don’t work downtown!)

Guest bloggers wanted!

Inside Shiki Sushi in Victoria, BC

Inside Shiki Sushi in Victoria, BC

Now that I’m back in the swing of things, taking photos and writing up short posts about great places to eat in Calgary and beyond, I’d like to open up this blog to anyone who would like to join me!

I’m looking for a few guest bloggers – either those who want to write an article once in a while, who maybe want to write once a month, or even those who just want to share one or two things that really excite them!

How it works:

You write an unbiased (but hopefully positive!) article about a topic you think would interest our readers. Food, cooking, recipes, spotlights on new food-based businesses, or even a critical-thinking piece about food service/etc.

  • If you have a WordPress account, I can add you as a guest writer.
  • If not, you can email me your article and I’ll write an introduction for you, post your article, and link to your blog or website.

I’ll also need at least one nice, clear photo (sized for web please – I usually stick to about 600pixels on the long side at a dpi of 72 – if you don’t know what this means, feel free to send me your photo and I can edit it). Your watermark can absolutely be included… it’s your photo… I’m just publishing it here with your permission.
