Of course, while in Maui we had to have Shave Ice… it might LOOK like a SnoCone but it isn’t… SnoCones used crushed ice, while a Shave Ice is.. well.. shaved! The result is a light, almost fluffy, snow-flake like ice, which is then packed down slightly (here at Ululani’s in Kahului they packed it down a lot, but the place we went just outside of Lahaina they didn’t pack it down as much…) With a good Shave Ice, the ice sort of absorbs the flavoured syrups, rather than just sitting around it. (So in that way, it’s kind of like a firm slushie…)
I had the “Hawaiian Rainbow” (You can select as many flavours as you like, though 2-4 is the most common, and they have suggested blends like this.) which is Vanilla (the blue), Pineapple (the yellow) and Strawberry (the red). Here they make their own syrups apparently (according to a news article I read while waiting for them to make my treat), where as at most places they use the same syrups you’d find at coffee shops and milkshake places. You can also get the sugar-free syrups, although only in certain flavours as available…
Mum had a Citrus Squeeze with Pink Lemonade, Lemon, Lime which she said was delicious too!
Isn’t it pretty, the way the colours blend together?
It is very cold, and very sweet… definitely something as a once-in-a-while treat on a hot day!
